In September 1998 Lexmark introduced the high-performance Optra Se 3455 monochrome laser printer that offered a print speed of 34 pages per minute (ppm) and featured a cartridge with a 23,000 page yield rating.

The Se 3455 cartridge uses existing Optra technology and has the same shape and design of the Optra S 4059 cartridge, but there are several differences. Modifications have been made to facilitate an increased toner capacity of 625 grams. Other differences include a new wiper blade assembly design, a removable tab, and a guard disk. The wiper blade assembly has a different design that incorporates an electrical brush device and accompanying electrical contacts. The base blade is the same as the 4059, but another metal stamping has been added to the top of the blade. The stamping supports a conductive brush strip that rides against the drum.

However, the most notable changes are the addition of an electronic microprocessor chip and a modified encoder wheel (in the 4059 it has two functions: cartridge identification and toner level sensing. The encoder wheel in the Se 3455 serves as a toner sensor only).

Remanufacturers should immediately recognize the Se 3455 cartridge by the silver tab and dime-size case that contains the cartridge chip attached to the top of the cartridge.
